We had breakfast here on Saturday after going to the Flea Market at the fairgrounds. There was a wait for a table because the place was Packed! Delightful waitress, rather long wait for our food- but it was worth it! Eggs done perfect, great omelet with some of the tastiest ham I'd ever had! We'd definitely go back next time we're on that side of town!

Ate here for the first time, finally. It was delish and will definitely go back! Ordered the Western Omelet with pancakes, 1/2 order of Bases Loaded Hashbrowns, and In The Dugout which was two eggs, hashbrowns and 1/2 order of biscuits and gravy. The gravy was some of the best in town! Looking forward to trying lunch! Service was excellent!

First visit to the Home Plate Diner and was very pleased with it when all said and done. Wasn't looking for elegance, just a solid neighborhood joint for breakfast. I had corned beef hash n eggs and it was good, my over-medium eggs were perfect, a nice side of hashbrowns accompanied the meal. The waitresses kept my coffee full, and I had ice water besides. If it's local, no frills, rib-stick food you're after, then I can heartily recommend the Home Plate Diner. Photos are included.

Weekday morning, fast friendly service. Gives the appearance of a dive but clean restaurant and bathrooms. Had a spill at the table and the waitress was there before the water had a chance to hit the floor. Food portions phenomenal. I had the veggie omelette with pancakes. Omelette was great, pancakes were chewy (not good). Outside of the pancakes it was a very pleasant dining experience.

Stopped here on a road trip. Great find!! Food was homemade and fabulous, price was right. Stop here if you can!

Great prices and they have AWESOME French Toast & Sausage patties. The customer service is very good. They make you feel at home. The food comes out quickly too.

Great place for breakfast any time of day! Delicious biscuits and gravy, great French toast. Love their onion rings!!! Would be five stars if service were more consistent!

Good place for breakfast. Not the stuff you get at the chains. This is the old fashioned diner food. Now I might have given it 4 stars but my eggs were a little over done and dry. The bacon was very good but when isn't bacon good.. I would go back and that is the best compliment you can give.

I love the Home Plate!! I go in minimum 3 times a week... I'm going to be honest.. It's an old building and they need to remodel... But then place is too busy most of the time... I stop in early mornings most of the time... They have early bird breakfast specials if you get there between 6 & 8 am... Also a different breakfast special n lunch special everyv day.. I'm a fan of their biscuits n gravy, and the pancakes are HUGE!! I've always had great food, and food service.. The young kids aren't as attentive as Jamie and Diane, but I tip accordingly...your cup is kept full until you say stop.. Yes when . There's stuff going on at the fairgrounds it's not as fast, but most weekdays I can get breakfast, easy it leisurely and be on way in just over half' an hour... They do things right... Dinners are awesome too... Go in for dinner!! The dinners are great!!

The one of the best open faced hot beef sandwiches in town, the chicken strips are hand breaded and awesome, and homemade soups are always good, the best place to take a hangover because the breakfast is AWESOME!

Very good local diner. Thanks for great service even when it was crowded on Sunday morning.

This place is located just outside the fairgrounds. There is not much that stands out about this diner, it is more local than a Perkins or Village Inn, but does not really have that old school diner feel either. Their food is good and service friendly. I have only eaten here once and thought it was a pretty good experience. I would try it again to see how their other dishes taste.

YUMMO. We got the special and pretty much everything in gravy. The bases loaded hash browns were a BIG hit. We have three hungry boys and we couldn't finish it all!

I've been wanting to try this place out for sometime now. Being that it was Mothers Day and didn't want to wait at most places for an hour or more, I thought this would be a good time to try it out. After waiting for only about 10 min to get a table we were off to a good start. Although the place was packed the flow of service was pretty steady. A bit slow at times, but to be expected due to the heavy traffic. With our 2yr old in tow he was getting a bit antsy but a server passing by brought him a toy to play with, followed up with a small bowl of fries to tie him over until the food arrived. Worked like a charm--she must have kids:) When the food did make its way to the table it was a little less than what I expected. The pancakes tasted good but they were a bit tough/chewy. My wife's Philly Omelette was really good but lacked the cheese. It would have been awesome if they would have put a healthy helping of a Provolone Cheese Sauce on top. Would I go back? You bet. I went in thinking a solid 4 but they came up a bit short.

Should be named Home Grease Plate Diner. Bacon, hash browns were covered in grease. Western omellette was ok and biscuit was good. French toast was soggy and under cooked and not made with the bread that was requested. Coffee to strong for my wife but was ok to me. Waitress was friendly but the place needs a lot TLC. Won't go back.

I'm giving this place five stars, because while the food is really only three stars worthy, the server I had instantly fixed something I found not to my liking yesterday and I appreciated that she is able to think on her feet like that and solve a problem. So five stars to the server, she was great.

I wasn't extremely impressed by the service and the food was good but not incredible, overall would I suggest it? Yeah I would.

Great little diner with lots and lots of choices. Fantastic breakfast, great tenderloins, soup and all.. so many good things. All the homemade, comfort food you would expect from a local owned, diner. The place is always busy, but they are really fast. I have never heard any one say they did not love this place!

Such a great find on the east-side of Des Moines! Always friendly and you feel comfortable and at home. The breaded chicken sandwich is a MUST-try!

Great breakfast! Old style family restuarant. However do not go of you are in a hurry.

won't be back! had breakfast cooked by a full figured woman. hash browns VERY cold, bacon cold and had a rancid taste. EVEN HAD FLECKS OF GREEN IN THE BACON. asked for burnt toast and it came to me and looked like warmed bread. Waitress brought it to me supposed to be burnt - 1/2 piece was a little dark and the rest was light. the woman can not cook! ATE BREAKFAST AT 11:00 - almost positive everything had been sitting since they opened at 6:00 - usually got great food when the GUY cooks.

Ok this place just blew our doors off, well worth the drive from the west side, friendly people, best breakfast I've had in Des Moines! Pegs eggs are the bomb-diggety Michelle was great waitress! Made my weekend!

Great place! Standard diner style comfort food for lunch and dinner. I haven't tried the breakfast (yet) but I hear good things about it. The best part is the service! All the waitresses wear buttons that say "I Do Hugs"...I've seen them do it. I've never been called "sweety" or "hon" so much in my life. Visit a few times and they remember who you are and will take an interest in how you've been. The other reviewer is right, not a place to go if you are in a hurry, though. I will be back again and again!
